Outreach expanding services for families to new Wilkes-Barre location

The Scranton-based nonprofit provides families with a variety of services that promote family stability and economic self-sufficiency.

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — A nonprofit based in Lackawanna County will now offer some of its services at a new location in Wilkes-Barre.

If the balloons on South Main Street didn't give it away, perhaps the giant pair of scissors cutting the ribbon here did at a celebration in Wilkes-Barre as the Outreach Center for Community Resources opened a second location.

"Outreach has proudly served participants in Lackawanna and the surrounding counties for over 35 years. And today marks an official next step in meeting the emerging needs of children and families in our community, and specifically in Luzerne County," said Lori Chaffers, Outreach's executive director.

Outreach provides families with a variety of services that promote family stability and economic self-sufficiency through programs and partnerships with other community groups and services. Many of these groups and services joined in celebrating the organization's expansion.

"We felt that Luzerne County was just the place that we wanted to bring the programs that we were offering in Scranton, very successfully, to the community down here. There's nothing now in Luzerne County like the evidence-based home visiting programs that we will be offering through here," said Bridget Matyjevich, Luzerne County program manager.

The location at 139 South Main Street in Wilkes-Barre will primarily offer services for parents and children.

"To give parents the tools they need to be stable in their homes and provide them with economic self-sufficiency," Matyjevich said.

In the meantime, staff members say they are eager and ready to help.

"It's very exciting," Matyjevich added. "We've worked really hard to come down here, and now that we're down here, our next step is to really get to know all of our community partners so we can work with them to make the families in Luzerne County as successful as, hopefully, we've made all the families in Lackawanna County."

Today is the day we cut the ribbon and officially announce the opening of our new location in downtown...
