Police: Suspicious death at Scranton home

Police responded to the home along St. Ann Street in the city's west side on Sunday.

SCRANTON, Pa. — Since Sunday, neighbors like Rajindra Surujpaul have watched Scranton Police come in and out of this home along Saint Ann Street in the city's West Side, "I asked him what's the problem going on here; he said you don't have to worry because they're investigating," she said.

According to police, it's the scene of a death investigation.

Property records show the home belongs to Walter Harman. According to police documents, neighbors say Harman has not been seen since mid-February.

"It's your typical quiet neighborhood, most of the time, except for now," said Jack Techmanski, Scranton.

Just a few houses down, Jack Techmanski, remembers police responding to the same house for a burglary a week prior.

According to court documents, Angel Berdecia admitted to entering the 1441 side of the duplex on March 5. He tried to run away once the police arrived, but officers caught up with him a short time later.

He also told police he had recently gone in and out of the home several times, taking power tools and jewelry to sell to support his drug addiction.

"We are not used to the cops being around 24/7," said Techmanski.

"We've just been watching out of the windows, honestly, and like pretending to do stuff out on the porch so we could be like, what's going on here," said Cassandra Jago, Scranton.

While police remain tight-lipped about the death investigation, neighbors like Cassandra Jago, who moved in next door just two weeks earlier, say they worried about their safety.

"I make sure my front door and back door are locked at all times. It just makes me feel uneasy, a little nervous, a little scared, and I would just like to know what's going on," said Jago.

Police say the death investigation is ongoing.

Angel Berdecia is locked up on burglary and related charges.
