Family in mourning after deadly shooting, robbery in Scranton

Jose Tatis succumbed to his injuries Saturday after being shot during a violent robbery at a gas station on North Main Avenue in Scranton last Thursday.

SCRANTON, Pa. — "I myself never pictured myself without any of my siblings in my life. You know, I didn't think that one of them could be taken from me so soon. And it is very tragic. My mother is devastated because no mother should ever bury a child," said Claudia Tatis of Hazleton as she discussed the aftermath of losing her brother.

According to the Lackawanna County Coroner's Office, 26-year-old Jose Tatis succumbed to his injuries on Saturday.

Police say he was shot in the head by Shelton Miles last Thursday night, who was allegedly robbing a convenience store on North Main Avenue.

"My mom had received a phone call from his fiancée. She was hysterical and crying and telling her that Jose had been shot. Apparently, she had sent him to the gas station nearby to buy something, and he was at the wrong place at the wrong time," explained Claudia.

Jose's sister Claudia tells Newswatch 16 he had only been living in Scranton for two weeks.

He leaves behind a 4-year-old daughter, a baby boy on the way, a fiancée whom he was supposed to marry the very next day, and a big family in Hazleton.

"Right now. It's just learning how to live with this for all of us because this is pain that never goes away," added Claudia.

Claudia says she wants her brother to be remembered for his commitment to his faith and family.

"Anybody that needed his his help. He was there. My brother was extremely generous. Even if he didn't have much himself he would always try his best to like help anybody that he could out," she explained.

Claudia says her brother's generosity continues after his death, as his organs were donated to help others in need.

The deadly shooting remains under investigation in Scranton.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help the family with expenses.
