Texas wiener fundraiser for Det. Gilmartin brings Texas-sized crowds

Newswatch 16's Courtney Harrison stopped by a popular lunch spot in Scranton where hot dogs were the hot item.

SCRANTON, Pa. — At Green Ridge News Mini Mart and Grill in Scranton, employees worked as fast as possible in the kitchen, cooking and serving up Texas wieners.

Store owner Kathy Colosimo pledged $1 from every dog to go towards Scranton Police Detective Kyle Gilmartin's recovery after he was shot last week.

The inside of the shop was packed with people; the line wrapped around the store. Foks said they didn't mind the wait because they knew it was worth it.

"Sometimes you have to wait anyway because it is this busy on Thursdays. It is for a good cause and my father retired back in '77 from the police," George Zvirblis said.

"I was told that this place can get crazy even without something going on. I didn't expect it to be quite this crowded, but it's for a good cause," Paulette Fargione said.

Every Thursday, the Texas wieners are on special for $1.25, but Colosimo says they are selling more than usual.

"1,400 to 1,500 on a regular Thursday, our record is 2,000. Today, we're looking for 3,000," Colosimo said.

People weren't ordering a couple of dogs at a time. Most orders were for several dozen. Some people even called as early as 24 hours in advance to order.

Colosimo brought in extra staff for the day, as they turned out thousands of Texas wieners to fill all the orders.

"It's amazing," Bryanna Colosimo said. "I knew it was going to be hectic but it's for a good cause and it just makes you feel good."
