Scranton-based supermarket accepts donations for wounded detective

Gerrity's Supermarkets said it will match the first $5,000

SCRANTON, Pa. — A Lackawanna County-based supermarket business will accept donations to aid a critically wounded Scranton police detective and will match the first $5,000 collected.

Each Gerrity's Supermarkets store and Ace Hardware location began accepting donations Monday, according to a news release.

Detective Kyle Gilmartin was badly injured last week in a shooting in West Scranton. He was struck by gunfire early Thursday morning while trying to apprehend people believed involved in other gunfire incidents reported hours prior.

"This hits especially close to home for us because we have a store in West Scranton, and my son, Joe, and his family live in West Scranton," said company President Joyce "Mom" Fasula in a statement. "We also want the Scranton Police Department and all law enforcement in our local communities to know that our family stands with you in this difficult time."

The business will give all of the money collected to Gilmartin's family.
