Woman hit by motorcycle and killed along I-81 in Lackawanna County

The highway was closed northbound at Exit 186 Dunmore/Drinker St.

DUNMORE, Pa. — UPDATE:  A woman died after being hit by a motorcycle along Interstate 81 in Lackawanna County Thursday morning.

According to the coroner, Darlene Denike, 48, of Scranton, died when she was struck by a motorcycle on I-81 north at mile marker 189.7 in Scranton.

Investigators said Denike was attempting to place a tire into her SUV when she was struck by the motorcycle.  The motorcycle going north traveled onto the shoulder to avoid stopped traffic when it collided with Denike.

The coroner said she died from multiple traumatic injuries. The manner of death is accidental. 

Interstate 81 north was closed for several hours in the area of the deadly wreck. The highway reopened around 9:30 a.m., according to PennDOT.
