Trail race coming to Wyoming County

The newly acquired state forest lands of Miller Mountain will be the site of a 25-K trail run in the fall.

TUNKHANNOCK, Pa. — The cool, crisp air makes for a peaceful setting on Miller Mountain near Tunkhannock in Wyoming County, where nature can be enjoyed without interruptions.

Last year, the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) announced it would stay this way. The 2,500 acres, including the farms bordering the mountain, have been acquired by the state and will become part of the Pinchot State Forest.

"It was private for a few decades with maybe a different, a few different opportunities," explained Kenny Young of Centermoreland. "I've heard of a ski resort, maybe happening here or a few other things. But as soon as Ben and I found out that it was going to be transferred back into state forest, we were super excited and thrilled to get here."

Kenny and Ben Robinson, another local runner, decided to organize the Miller Mountain Trail Challenge to take place here on October 5.

Runners can choose between a 25-kilometer race on the mountain, which is about 15 miles.

"That course has about 4,700 feet in elevation gains. So, to kind of put that in perspective, those that are skiers, like Montage, it's about running from the bottom to the top about five times," explained Robinson.

Or a 5-mile course for those who are new to trail running.

The duo tells Newswatch 16 that much of the course is already in place from logging roads and ATV trails on the mountain.

These running enthusiasts are also excited that this challenge will share the beauty of the Endless Mountains with a larger part of the community.

"You get to be outside and hear the birds and feel the wind but there's nothing like running through the woods in the trails and appreciating nature that way. And so, it's exciting that we have it right in our backyard and Tunkhannock," said Young.

They're also giving back to the community. Money from the race will help two local charities.

"Countryside Conservancy helps conserve land locally and the Wyoming County United Way," added Robinson.
