Dante at Dessin Animal Shelter | 16 To The Rescue

In this week's 16 To The Rescue, we meet a cattle dog mix who came to live at an animal shelter near Honesdale after his previous owner got too sick to care for him.

DYBERRY, Pa. — In this week's 16 to the Rescue, we meet a 6-year-old dog named Dante.

"He's like a big giant puppy. I mean, he's big, but when he sits down, he gets really small," said Linda Gambone, Dessin Animal Shelter.

Dante is a cattle dog mix, but rescue workers say they see a little St. Bernard in his face and they see a little Labrador in his personality.

"He loves everybody, so I think he would be really good with any kind of family—children or adults. He's big, but he's very much a gentle giant," Gambone said.

Dante and his sibling, a chihuahua mix, were brought to Dessin Animal Shelter near Honesdale when their previous owner got too sick to care for them.

"So very unfortunate, and they had to give them up. Both dogs, very healthy, very well socialized, and in fact, the little guy has already been adopted, so Dante's turn his next," said Gambone.

Dante has been living at Dessin for about six weeks, and rescue workers at the shelter in Wayne County say he is doing really well there. However, he would be much happier on a farm where he has lived all his life.

"Not necessarily a farm but a very similar environment for him, somebody with a big backyard or a large property, and it doesn't have to be fenced in. He spent his life off-leash, so he's very good at that, and he just wants to be able to mosey around and sniff every corner. So, if you're the type of person who spends time outside or on your property, he would be the perfect companion dog. He would just hang out with you all day," Gambone said.

Rescue workers say Dante could go to a home with cats, but another dog would have to be the right fit; their energy levels would have to match, and the house and property should be big enough. They say Dante's energy level is medium to low, but he sometimes can get rambunctious.

"He does play with toys. He'll run around with a plushy and throw it around and roll it on the ground. He's adorable. He's got really good skills. He's patient with food and treats, and he'll sit for them and give his paw. He's just very sweet," Gambone said.
