Local candy stores see business boom ahead of holidays

Halloween is right around the corner. For many, that means trick-or-treating and, of course, candy!

UNION COUNTY, Pa. — The tables at Purity Candy are filled with spooky spiders, goblins, and mummies. A few feet away, there are large turkeys.

"It's not Thanksgiving without the chocolate turkey," Alice Palmer of Chambersburg said.

The candy store near Allenwood is preparing for the holidays.

"This is the busiest time," said owner John Burfeindt. "We do all our business in the next five months."

Burfeindt says Purity Candy, like many other stores, has had to raise prices a bit.

"It's inevitable when the economy has gone as well as it has in the past couple of years, supply, demand for labor, everything, prices are going to go up," Burfeindt said.

Even so, Burfeindt is optimistic.

"We have seen in the past when the economy goes down a little bit, at least during the holidays, our sales are still strong. Once again, it's tradition, what people want," Burfeindt said.

"Everything Thanksgiving," Tom Gleason of Wellsboro said. "For the past 20 years, I've come down this way just to buy Purity Candy."

Tradition and shopping locally are what bring many of Purity Candy's customers through the door.

"The heart of this country, quite honestly, is the small businesses. It's the moms and the pops and their employees," Gleason said.

"We live in a town, and we want it to grow and thrive; we have to put money back into the town. I love supporting local stores," Palmer said.

"We employ people who are in your own backyard here. I think that's what you're really helping when you do that," Burfeindt said.
