One dead, two in custody after shooting in Sunbury

Officers were called to the 400 block of Market Street for a reported shooting.

SUNBURY, Pa. — Shots rang out overnight in Northumberland County, leaving one person dead, and police quickly charged two people in connection with the shooting.

The shooting happened around 11:30 p.m. Thursday night on Market Street in Sunbury, a heavily traveled area lined with businesses.

Police tape and evidence markers block a section of Market Street in the city. Police responded late Thursday night for a homicide.

Eliud Marrero-Morales of Sunbury was shot and killed.

18-year-old Jose Jusino-Morales of Sunbury is charged with criminal homicide and is accused of pulling the trigger.

21-year-old Armando Pena-Alvayero of Sunbury is charged with tampering with evidence. Investigators say he hid the gun.

Sunbury police say Jusino-Morales and the victim were each driving on Market Street. Police say they were on the phone with each other, arguing over a woman. They stopped and got out of their vehicles, and that’s when police say Jusino-Morales opened fire. He and the other suspect were arrested shortly after.

"We came together as a department. The team worked well together, and we brought a resolution to this horrible tragedy," said Acting Chief Travis Bremigen, Sunbury Police Department.

The late-night shooting happened right in downtown Sunbury.

Neighbors tell Newswatch 16 the incident had them on edge.

“Am I scared for my wife's safety? Of course. Am I scared for the dogs' safety? Of course,” said Tony Lesenveld, Co-owner of The Painted Pooch. “But this is a random act, I'm sure.”

"Violence is on the rise. You really don’t know what to do about it at this time, but it is on the rise," said Mark Gulas, Sunbury.

Mark Gula was frustrated when he heard about the shooting.

"It’s very nerve-wracking, and you just have to be aware of where you’re at at all times," said Gula.

Sunbury police say the public is not in any danger. Both suspects remain locked up in the Northumberland County Jail.
