One person dies in Monroe County blaze

The fire at a home in Hamilton Township started after 2 a.m. Thursday.

MONROE COUNTY, Pa. — One person has died after a fire in Monroe County.

The deadly blaze destroyed a home on North Easton Belmont Pike in Hamilton Township after 2 a.m. Thursday.

State troopers pulled a woman from the burning building. A man's body was recovered after the fire was out.

The name of the victim was not released.

Suzanne Labar lives two houses away.

"My husband came and woke me up and said, 'The house is on fire.' And I'm like, 'Whose house?' And he said, 'The guy in the wheelchair.' I'm like, 'No.' I go out there, and it is as bright as can be."

State police say when they arrived, they heard screams coming from inside the home.

"We did have reports on the way here that there was confirmed entrapment, and when I arrived, state police were working on pulling one person out of the back of the house," said Asst. Chief Paul Warnick, Blue Ridge Hook and Ladder.

After the fire was out, officials say they found the victim inside. A woman was taken to the hospital for her injuries.

Warnick says every fire has its own set of challenges.

"It's a 1900s construction farmhouse, so it was dealing with heavy timber-frame structure. It was hot. There was a lot of hand work to pick through stuff just trying to get through. There was a lot of debris inside the house," said Paul Warnick, Blue Ridge Hook and Ladder Assistant Chief.

Neighbors say they're devastated.

"I've seen him several times there. The son is always sitting on the porch in his wheelchair and cute little dog. Everybody beeps, even the school buses will beep because he was always out there," Labar said.

Responding troopers were treated for minor injuries at the scene.

There is no word on the cause of the fire.
