Hughesville Jr./Sr. High School holds yearly May Day celebration

Newswatch 16's Mackenzie Aucker checked out the festivities.

HUGHESVILLE, Pa. — Hughesville Jr./Sr. High School students cheered for their classmates inside the high school gym on Thursday. They enjoyed a fun field day full of sweets, games, and outdoor activities for the school's yearly May Day event.

"And then, our last rotation, we do some kind of fun activity in the auditorium, whether it's like a Jeopardy game or Family Feud or something like that. And then, of course, we had the whole May Day ceremony; it's such a big tradition," said Josh Fry, a math teacher at Hughesville Jr./Sr. High.

May Day is a tradition that has been at the school for years. Freshmen and seniors are able to run for May Day Court, where their classmates vote for them to become May Day Princess, Prince, Mr. Spartan, or Queen.

"To do the crowning and stuff is just an honor, and it's a cool Hughesville tradition. No other schools seem to have this so kind of a Hughesville specialty," said Fry.

Students who have their licenses are also able to drive their tractors to school for May Day

"Nobody else does it. I mean, it's fun. It gives the country kids something to do. I mean, you don't hear of anybody driving tractors to school anymore like we used to. But I think it's a great opportunity for everybody," said senior Alex Farley.

May Day is full of fun and enjoyment to recognize the hard work students have put in all school year. It's something everyone looks forward to.

"To let loose a little bit, have a sweet treat, go jump on the inflatable, get involved in the Jeopardy activity and just all around have a fun day. I think one of the things I look forward to every year is going around and looking at all of the different tractors, and trucks, and stuff like that that kids are excited to bring to school," said Fry.

"It's not a normal day of school. It gives everybody a chance to relax and have a little fun. It's usually positive; we always have fun, and it's just a good time," said Farley

The school is already planning for next year's May Day.
