Stormy weather causing problems in Luzerne County

Wild weather on Monday morning left behind some damage.

LUZERNE COUNTY, Pa. — The wind did some damage Monday in the Wilkes-Barre area.

Strong winds made a mess on Pershing Street, causing many in the Heights section of Wilkes-Barre to shelter in place because of the downed power lines.

"It sheared the telephone poles in half. It knocked a huge pine tree down. It's just a disaster. I can't believe it," said Frank Oldziejewski.

Oldziejewski lives behind Pershing Street, and he's facing a mess of his own.

"I was making some breakfast, and all I heard was something hit the side of the house, and I said, 'the heck was that?!' I went out here, opened the door, and I couldn't believe it. The roof blew off that house, come right down, and it was a mess."

Newswatch 16 saw many roofs in the Wilkes-Barre area destroyed by wind.

The famous flower tent on Mundy Street in Wilkes-Barre Township was flattened by the wind after becoming a local icon for standing tall in 2018 when an EF-2 tornado blew past and destroyed many big-box stores.

Also in the township, a vacant commercial space on Blackman Street had the roof peeled right off.

City Hall in Wilkes-Barre is also missing part of its roof. The fire chief tells Newswatch 16 engineers went in after the damage was caused to see if the building was structurally sound. He and other city officials are assessing the damage and making plans on what to do next.

Our rooftop camera on Public Square in Wilkes-Barre shows part of the roof of City Hall peeled up and flipped over by the strong winds.
