Picking up last-minute sweets for Valentine's Day

Newswatch 16's Emily Kress takes us to a couple chocolate shops in Luzerne County.

It's the one day of the year to show some extra love for the people in your life.

Alle's Candy Shoppe on Rutter Avenue in Forty Fort saw a rush of people picking up sweets for their sweethearts. But there's nothing like waiting until the day of.

"This year, I was a little backed up with work, so I said she is in the shower, so if I run out, get back in time, I can make arrangements and say 'Happy Valentine's Day, babe, I wasn't late,'" said Ronald Drayton.

Ronald Drayton of Wilkes-Barre says he usually doesn't wait this long to pick up his fiancée's favorites.

"She's a lover of white chocolate, so she loves white chocolate. I was looking around trying to find an assortment of white chocolate," said Drayton.

Evie Stefanides helps out at her daughter's candy shop. She says better late than never.

"A lot of guys are clueless, but they are fun and are really sweet. I think it is great they didn't forget so what if they are here on the last day, we are happy they came in," said Stefanides.

The most popular treat for the holiday of love is chocolate-covered strawberries. Stefanides says nearly 1,000 berries will go out the door.

"Strawberries are really popular, so we are here at 5:30, 6 a.m. getting all of the orders ready. So that is the number one thing for this holiday," said Stefanides.

From chocolate-covered strawberries to boxes of peanut butter chiffon, each store has its own specialty people are looking to get their hands on.

Jon Stopay Candies in Plains saw a steady flow of customers picking up treats.

"No, never a surprise. It is mostly the gentlemen, I will say, not to rat them out," said store manager Joshua Mulcahy.

"I'm a candy freak, I guess. Peanut butter, that's the best seller at the company. Today is my anniversary, married 54 years today," said Joe Rinaldi of Dunmore.

Shoppers have a word of advice for next year.

"Fellas, don't do like me. Don't wait 'til the last minute. If you can, get it done as soon as possible," said Drayton

Both shops say that now that Valentine's Day has come to a close, it's time to start thinking about Easter candy.
