Kicking off the weekend on the water at Harveys Lake

It was an early start for some boaters in Luzerne County this Memorial Day Weekend.

HARVEYS LAKE, Pa. — It was an early start for some boaters on Harveys Lake this Memorial Day Weekend.

"Beautiful day, perfect start to Memorial Day weekend," said Mark Sobeck.

For the Sobeck family, they're returning to their roots.

"I spent my summers at the lake growing up," says James Sobeck.

The brothers are taking their new ride out on its maiden voyage. James Sobeck is spending the summer in Luzerne County after nearly 50 years.

"I'm going to gain about 20 pounds between pierogis and Old Forge pizza, so I'm not excited about that, but I am excited about the lake," laughs James.

While the warm weather means one thing for this family.

"Boating, lots of boating. Going to dock parties and boathouses. And all the Harvey's Lake stuff we're used to doing," said Mark.

For others, they're hoping the fish are just as excited.

"Love it! I caught a few smallmouth bass today," said Mike Oravitz of Exeter.

Oravitz is getting a head start on the holiday, beating the other boating traffic.

"It's calm today. I won't come out this weekend for fishing. It'll be too much boat traffic," the Oravitz added.

But it's not lost on these boaters on what this weekend is all about.

"Our father was in the first wave in Iwo Jima, and he was in the Marine Corps for six years. So, we don't ever forget their sacrifices," said James.

As they start off their summer by soaking up the sunshine and enjoying what all Harveys Lake has to offer.

"It was almost 70 the other day, so after this warm weather, it'll probably get into the mid-70s; nice swimming. There will be a lot of boats and a lot of waves. So we look forward to bouncing around out there," added Mark.
