Man dies after house fire in Luzerne County

Flames broke out around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday along Tomhicken Road in Black Creek Township near Sugarloaf Township.

LUZERNE COUNTY, Pa. — One person died in the hospital after a fire in Luzerne County.

Lehigh County Coroner's Office confirmed with Newswatch 16 that 76-year-old Arthur Dice passed away on Wednesday after being injured in Tuesday's fire.

Fire crews responded to the home along Tomhicken Road just after 5:40 p.m. on Tuesday evening in Black Creek Township near Sugarloaf Township for a house fire with one person trapped inside.

Heavy flames and smoke billowed from the home as crews from several departments worked to extinguish the flames.

Due to the location, Fire Chief Joe Lescowitch said the Nuremberg and Weston Volunteer Fire Departments had to truck in water from more than two miles away.

"The gentleman was out upon our arrival, turned over to ALS. He was transported to the local hospital with burns. That’s all I can tell you there," said Chief Joe Lescowitch, Nuremberg Weston Volunteer Fire Dept.

The victim's family members who live next door tell Newswatch 16 that a nephew had gone inside the home before firefighters arrived and pulled the homeowner to safety.

A Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
