Outpouring of community support continues for Det. Kyle Gilmartin

Newswatch 16's Courtney Harrison tells us about two more fundraisers and why the business owners wanted to help.

LACKAWANNA COUNTY, Pa. — Signs with a photo of Detective Kyle Gilmartin hang in the window of Kost Tire and Auto Service in Clarks Summit, offering another way to help the Scranton officer shot in the line of duty last week.

If you go for service at any of the Kost locations, they're offering to donate $10 from every oil change and 10 percent from gift card purchases.

"It's awful. So we just felt we had to do something. We need to do something, and this is what we're doing right now," Erwin Kost Jr. said.

Kost says they're already off to a good start and hope to continue the efforts.

"We just started this Wednesday, the 17th, and in two days, we raised over $1,000. So initially, it was going to go to the end of the month. But I think we're going to extend that. we're going to go to Valentine's Day," Kost said.

Fame's Barbershop along North Main Avenue in Scranton also wanted to help Detective Gilmartin and his family and are planning a few things for next week.

"We're offering a 15 percent donation from every haircut we give for the 23rd and the 24th of this month," Victor Penzo said.

Then, on Thursday, January 25, any police officer in the area is welcome to get a free haircut. Owner Liliana Ortega says this was an opportunity to help a man who protects their community and his family.

"He has a daughter; I think she's 1. So, that really hits my heart because I have a son that's 1 year old too," Ortega said.

Detective Gilmartin is still in the hospital in critical condition. The Scranton Police Department says they appreciate the outpouring of support from the community.
