Turnpike closures announced for this weekend

Weather permitting, portions of the Pennsylvania Turnpike are expected to be closed at times throughout the weekend.

PENNSYLVANIA, USA — Portions of the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Carbon and Luzerne Counties are expected to be closed at times throughout the weekend.

According to the Turnpike Commission, both directions of the Northeast Extension (I-476) between the Wyoming Valley (Exit #115) and the Pocono (Exit #95) Interchanges will be closed for bridge work on Sunday, April 21, from 12 a.m. until 5 a.m. and is weather permitting.

During the closure, traffic will be directed off the Turnpike.

Drivers can use the following suggested detours to get back on the Turnpike:

  • Northbound Detour: I-80 West 16.8 miles I-81 North 23.6 miles PA 315 North 0.3 miles Re-enter at Wyoming Valley Interchange #115.
  • Southbound Detour: PA 315 South 1.4 miles I-81 South 23.7 miles I-80 East 16.8 miles Re-enter at Pocono Interchange #95.

Pennsylvania State Police and Turnpike personnel will be positioned at the impacted areas to assist drivers. 

Digital message signs will also provide information on this closure. Motorists are encouraged to plan travel accordingly. Work schedules are subject to change based on weather conditions.

In Carbon County, the northbound exit ramp of the Northeast Extension to the PA Route 903 Interchange (Exit 87) will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday, April 19, to 6 a.m. Saturday, April 20, and then the entry ramp from 10 p.m. on Sunday, April 21, to 6 a.m. Monday, April 22, to allow technicians to safely perform tolling equipment maintenance.

During the ramp closure on Friday night, motorists will not be able to exit the Northeast Extension at PA Route 903 in the northbound direction. 

During Sunday night's ramp closure, motorists will not be able to enter the Northeast Extension at PA Route 903 in the northbound direction.

Northbound motorists should seek alternate routes by using the nearest available interchange on I-476 depending on your travel destination.
