Restoring honor to a World War II monument

A memorial display in Union County that honors those who fought in World War II is in need of some help.

MIFFLINBURG, Pa. — The Union County World War II Honor Roll is a monument in Mifflinburg Community Park. It lists the names of the 2,260 people from Union County who served in World War II.

"There's people all the way from New Columbia, White Deer, Allenwood, all the way up to the West End," Doug Walter said.

Doug Walter and his wife Tracy run the Union County Veterans Foundation. Tracy's father, Al Hess, and another veteran, Drew Machamer, designed the honor roll.

"It was quite a process to get all those names. My father-in-law told me there were 19 different sources that they used," Walter said.

But over the last 20 years, the honor roll has seen better days. Parts of the monument need to be restored.

"They worked tirelessly to get this built, and we are not going to let this recede to a point where we're ashamed of it," Walter said.

Walter says it costs $14,000 to do the bronze work to restore the monument.

"He's planning on taking all the bronze segments of this monument off, take them back to his place, which is near Pittsburgh, refurbish them there, reseal them properly," Walter said.

The Union County Veterans Foundation is looking for donations to offset the cost:
