Celebrating Earth Day with a new trail in Susquehanna County

The Bridgewater Interpretive Trail was unveiled Monday by the Susquehanna County Conservation District.

SUSQUEHANNA COUNTY, Pa. — "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together" was the proverb that started a ceremony at the start of the new Bridgewater Interpretive Trail outside the Susquehanna County Conservation District near Montrose.

Lillian Theophanis, who worked for the organization for 30 years, agrees with the sentiment.

"That's a lot of effort has gone into this. Many, many wonderful directors and staff have participated in putting this thing together," said Theophanis.

For her, this ribbon cutting is very special.

"It is a dream come true for me personally, because for every single five year plan that I ever lead in creating, this was one of the things that was in that plan," Theophanis added.

The quarter-mile trail around the conservation district building might be small, but the district hopes it makes a big impact.

Not only for pollinators, that will soon have a field of flowers to forge in, where this dirt sits that lines the trail.

"I'm telling you beautiful beyond and having coast for lots of pollinators that are, are basically the backbone to our food system," said Franklin Township resident Concetta Schirra.

Or the watershed that this stake garden will assist.

"We can take clippings off of the plants and be able to propagate them almost and help with some different bank stabilization projects," explained trail coordinator Devyn Voda.

But also for educating visitors, especially children, about nature's impact and how to keep it thriving.

"Spread the joy, spread the message of planting trees. So many of our trees were taken down in the early years of our country. We are replacing them one by one," said Theophanis.

If you want to visit the trail and learn more, you can visit it from dawn to dusk anytime.
