Animal rescue prepares for opening weekend

Now that it's getting warmer outside, some businesses are opening for the season. One of those places is T&D's Cats of the World outside of Middleburg.

SNYDER COUNTY, Pa. — Spring has sprung, and with that comes a lot of activity at T&D's Cats of the World. The animal rescue near Middleburg opens for the season this weekend, and volunteers have been busy preparing.

"Doing a lot of spring cleaning from the winter in the animal enclosures and the paths for the visitors who come see the animals, some spring cleaning or maintenance of the enclosures themselves," owner Jennifer Mattive said.

Volunteers have also been busy in the offseason, particularly in the lemur enclosure, which has been expanded to double the size of their outdoor area.

"Which was something we wanted to do this summer, but we had a mild winter, so we were able to do that and get it done before we opened," Mattive said.

Mattive says this will be known as the Summer of the Lemurs. Special events will be held on the first Sundays of June, July, and August.

"It's a lot of fun, and we're going to do some enrichment for the lemurs as well, so it won't be just for the kids, but the lemurs will get some special treats," Mattive said.

Mattive says all of the animals here are rescues. Many of them were illegally owned pets.

"We also receive animals from zoos and other rescue facilities. And then we have some non-releasable Pennsylvania wildlife that have injuries that they can't be returned to the wild; they wouldn't survive, but they're OK for educational purposes," Mattive said.

T&D's Cats of the World will be open Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 6 p.m.
