ORWIGSBURG -- The fact that a body camera played a role in an officer's arrest in Ohio shows that more and more controversial incidents are being caught on camera.

The video from the body camera worn by that the former University of Cincinnati police officer did not match his story.

People in Schuylkill County say even though the video didn't save the person's life, it could prevent a similar situation from happening again.

It's been said there are two sides to every story, but some of the people who've watched the video from Cincinnati say that's not always the case, especially when the pictures don't seem to match the story told by law enforcement.

"I mean there's more cases of pulling guns out on people who are just trying to hand you their wallet or show you ID, they think you are reaching for a weapon. If that kind of incident happens where they fire their weapon I think having a visual aid instead of hearsay would be a lot more helpful," said Billy Lemin from Tower City.

Even many police officers think the truth told by body cameras is valuable.

"I think body cams are a fabulous tool for both law enforcement officers and civilians at large, because not only will it hold police officers accountable in this case, Cincinnati, but it also holds the public accountable for their actions," said Orwigsburg Ptlm. Robert Bechtel.

Ptlm. Bechtel works for the Orwigsburg police department and is a strong supporter of body cams on officers. But because budgets are tight, his department will have to wait, but he hopes to see them in the future.

"So when you go into court one side of the story will be backed up with the use of the body camera."

Even though body cams are still a little ways away for officers in Orwigsburg, dash cams aren't. They are actually installing one in one of their larger patrol vehicles soon.

"That will be our first vehicle that we are able to use with a camera," Bechtel explained.

Others say they hope to see more officers equipped with body cams because there have been too many instances where the wrong person was accused.

"Whatever happens, they can prove their case in court," said Cathy Bowers of Pottsville.
