Snowstorm damage causes power outages for Schuylkill County residents

The storm knocked out power to tens of thousands of Schuylkill County homes and businesses.

SCHUYLKILL COUNTY, Pa. — A tree brought down power lines across Mill Creek Avenue in Port Carbon during Tuesday's snowstorm. A few miles away in Pottsville, traffic lights were out on Route 61 forcing first responders to direct traffic.

"To red church, which isn't far away, there were at least 6 cars in ditches, and it's pretty ugly out," said Curtis Hoffman, Snow Plower

Hoffman tells us he's been spinning his tires all day in the snow and slush, but there are other problems the winter storm caused.

"One of my tenants just called, two tree limbs came down, for him, you know it's always something, it's the heavy snow, I guess lots of power out," said Hoffman.

More than 20,000 homes and businesses across the county were left in the dark Tuesday afternoon. While power was on in some parts of Minersville, those outages forced all the businesses at Kings Village to close.

"We're losing clocks, we never actually lost our power, but it got pretty close, I think, I heard a bunch of trees breaking, and that's anything with that kind of snow, heavy wet like that, not good," said Cody Petravich, Minersville

Some parts of Schuylkill County have power, but here in Port Carbon, people are relying on the snow to keep their food cold; as for heat, that is a major concern.

"We don't have a torpedo heater, we don't have a generator, nothing like that, so we're just winging it, run the water, make sure nothing freezes, you know, that whole thing," said Tristan Vinglinsky.
