The streets of Shenandoah will be filled with the smells of a popular ethnic food this weekend.
Some call it kielbasa, other say it kielbasy. No matter how you pronounce it you'll agree that it's good eating. You might be hard pressed to find anyone who hasn't tasted the specialty.
"This year I'd like to check it out," said Frank Germanoro of Frackville.
The three main producers of kielbasa in Shenandoah have portable refrigerators full for the 5th annual Kielbasa Festival.
"It's going to be hectic. This is our fifth year so we know what's going to happen. We have to be here early and set up and get everything heated up and ready to go," said Carole Stanakis of Capitol Food Market.
Dave Lukashunas and other kielbasa makers are always trying to come up with new versions.
"One of the things we've come up with is kielbasy keech. It has kielbasy loaf and the high temperature melt cheddar cheese," said Lukashunas.
Organizers said the kielbasa festival is so big they close the main street just for the vendors.
The highlight of the day is when amateur makers of kielbasa go through a taste test.
"It makes for a fun afternoon and anybody that wins. There is first and second place and they get the bragging rights for having the best Kielbasy at the Kielbasy fest," said Mark Kowalonek of Kowalonek Kielbasy Shop.
The 5th annual Shenandoah Kielbasa Festival runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
