Demolition underway on historic Shenandoah building

Crews have begun tearing down the J.W. Cooper building along North White Street in Shenandoah.

SHENANDOAH, Pa. — A historic building in Schuylkill County is coming down.

Demolition crews recently started taking down the J.W. Cooper building in Shenandoah.

It was condemned last month after a part of it collapsed.

According to the building's owners, it was built in 1917 and then dedicated as the new Shenandoah High School two years later.

A former student stopped by to see the decades-old building come down.

"I really, really enjoyed the place. Enjoyed it. I mean, it's a shame. Sometimes, I even cried that I'd be worried about it, like looking at it and saying I wish it never would have happened. But when pieces started falling out of it, I said oh my God, no, why can't they fix it? But now you see what happens," said James Novatka, Shenandoah.

The Beverly Mattson Memorial Food Bank was operating out of the J.W. Cooper building; they are still looking for a new location.
