WEST PENN TOWNSHIP -- It's been a few years since people came to eat at the former Leiby's restaurant and ice cream house outside of Tamaqua.

The place closed back in 2007, after more than 40 years in business.

"I honestly feel like when I drive past it, I feel like it's still open sometimes," said Miranda Amy of West Penn Township.

Marie Miller of West Penn Township said, "I remember it always being busy and they had great ice cream and their pies were legendary."

"Every year for my birthday I would ask my mom and dad for a Leiby's ice cream cake because they're my favorite," said Amy.

Back in 2008, a businessman from Allentown bought the property and planned to turn it into a mini-mart, but he died shortly after and his daughters decided it would be best to sell the place.

It's been on the market since 2013 and is listed at almost $750,000.

The former restaurant sits right at a busy intersection between Route 309 and Route 443, a real estate agent said that's good for business and people who live in the area said they would love to see another restaurant right there.

"We don't actually have any restaurants in this area," said Miller.

Amy said, "Hopefully a locally owned restaurant could get a lot of business, especially along the highway here. I think it would be a great spot for it."

The real estate agent for the property said that someone is interested in buying the former Leiby's and has recently toured the place.

So far, no sale is final and there is no word on what the place might become.
