Families celebrate New Year's weekend at Poconos resort

Newswatch 16's Courtney Harrison explains how staff in Pike County prepares for the crowds and why families come back

PIKE COUNTY, Pa. — Families checking in at Woodloch Resort near Hawley are all here to ring in the New Year. President and CEO Bradley Kisendahl says he anticipates the resort will be fully booked for the holiday weekend.

"Whenever we have over a thousand people on campus at Woodloch Resort, there's a lot of thought process, and then the weather throws a curveball to that, so we've got to be flexible and adaptable as we go along," said Kisendahl.

Once guests arrive, there's no shortage of things to do. The resort hosts all kinds of events before the clock strikes midnight.

"We will have the fireworks at 6 p.m., which go off over the lake.  It's a beautiful setting to ring in the New Year," added Kisendahl. "We have a big band that's playing in the nightclub and over 500 people in the nightclub.  We also do something unique and put up a midnight buffet."

Spending the weekend at Woodloch has become something of a family tradition for many.

"This will actually be our third or fourth year celebrating New Year's at Woodloch, and it's just so fun.  There are a lot of families.  We make some new friends.  We ring in the New Year with people from different areas and different size families," said Jessica Freund from Hillsborough, NJ.

The Freund family says spending time together is important, and no matter how old sisters Abagail and Madelyn get, they still love it.

"There's a variety of things to do. Not just for one age, there's different ages that can do stuff," said Madelyn Freund from Hillsborough, NJ.

"I just like hanging out with my family and going somewhere where I feel safe and I enjoy.  The staff is also very nice.  It makes me feel really good," added Abagail Freund from Hillsborough, NJ.
