Power To Save: Volunteers To Target Mess Along The River

WILKES-BARRE -- Now that the weather is getting nicer, a popular outdoor recreation area is getting busier but those heading to the levee system trails and the parks along the Susquehanna River in the Wilkes-Barre area are finding they are a mess.

In this week's Power to Save report, we take a look at an effort to clean it up.

Shelby Hess of Wilkes-Barre was out taking her dog for a walk in a popular spot for a stroll but piles of trash are all over the place near the Susquehanna River levee trails and in Nesbitt Park in Wilkes-Barre.

"Oh, my gosh, yeah, even down there, there's a ton of trash everywhere, clothes, just debris," said Hess.

"A lot of people come here with their families and friends and a lot of people play at the parks and I think it's a shame there's so much garbage all around," said Natalie Soloman of Mountain Top.

Soloman was jogging by all the mess and happy to hear there's now an effort planned to clean it up.

The Luzerne Conservation District wants volunteers to target the messy areas near the river next Saturday morning, April 26.

"I'm very glad to see that. I hope they get a lot of people out to help with the cleanup," Soloman said.

Tammy Hulsizer from Kingston was enjoying lunch along the river.

"It's just a matter of time. It's like a week later you wish they could come right back."

She just wishes those who do the littering would get the message from the volunteers doing the cleanup: that someone cares, and that people treasure this land near the river.

"It's almost like someone's being spiteful about it, that they don't want anyone to enjoy the peace and quiet of nature," Hulsizer said.

You can find the details about the event next weekend here if you want to help with the cleanup along the river.
