Community mourning two killed in early-morning fire in Northumberland County

A community is in mourning after a fire ripped through a home in Point Township Monday morning, killing two people.

NORTHUMBERLAND COUNTY, Pa. — Black soot stains the siding of this home along John's Way near Northumberland.

Crews responded to the home in Point Township around 12:45 a.m. Monday morning.

"I got here knowing that it was my parents' house," said Assistant Chief Michael Erdman, Point Township Fire Department.

Stepbrothers Assistant Chief Michael Erdman and Chief Brent Filbert of the Point Township Fire Department say they knew the fire they were responding to was at their family's home.

When they arrived, Erdman's mother and Filbert's father and brother were still inside.

"Started to see the smoke which happens And then started to notice that there was nobody in the front yard," said Assistant Chief Erdman.

The Northumberland County Coroner says Wendy Filbert, 63,  and Michael Filbert, 40, were killed.

A third family member, Wendy's husband, who is also named Michael Filbert, suffered burns and is currently undergoing treatment at Lehigh Valley Health Network Burn Center in Allentown.

"I'll say given the the negative outcome as far as a fire department operation goes I couldn't ask for anything better it was flawless. We got three victims out of the house in a few minutes right now we have our stepdad who is in Lehigh Valley. We just got an update on him, and we're doing the best we can," explained Assistant Chief Erdman.

The two firefighters say support has been pouring in from all over their tight-knit community, some even leaving flowers on the front porch.

"Our fire department, his fire department, our neighboring fire departments all have reached out to us," said Chief Brent Filbert, Point Township Fire Department.

"And to just have something like this happen it's you just you see the brotherhood of the fire service come through and it's just been astounding," said Erdman.

As the two men continue to grieve, they say memories will help keep their lost loved ones in their hearts.

"I have a hate for the Phillies, but with her it was, everything was about Phillies. I enjoyed picking on her about the Phillies anytime I had to, and my brother is the same way. He was a big Phillies fan," said Chief Filbert.

"He wore a Philly hat at the last Phillies game he went to don't let him fool you," added Erdman.

The deadly fire has been ruled an accident. The state police fire marshal said it started by discarded smoking materials.
