Danville Area Community Center expanding

The center in Montour County is expanding but still needs about $500,000 to make that happen. Newswatch 16's Nikki Krize explains how you can help.

DANVILLE, Pa. — Between the swimming pool, weight room, and fitness classes, there is a lot going on at the Danville Area Community Center (DACC).

If all goes according to plan, the DACC will look much different this time next year. The facility is about to go through a $2.5 million renovation.

The center is nearly 40 years old, and members say it needs upgrades.

"Every place needs growth," said Jim Holdren from Danville. "You have to grow in order to be better."

The Danville Area Community Center recently got a $1 million state grant for renovations but still needs about $500,000. At the top of the list is a new child care facility.

"People need to get to work. They need a place for their kids to go. People moving into the area need that type of service, so we are absolutely planning on a facility to offer child care," said DACC's Harry Mathias.

The plan is to add more outdoor recreation areas and indoor spaces to socialize.

"Places where they can sit down, read the newspaper, watch TV. They can hang out with their friends, get a cup of coffee through Basin Coffee, Danville's local coffee shop," Mathias said.

Members we spoke with are happy about the upcoming renovations.

"I think it's a great idea," James Christy said. "It's a 37-year-old building, and it needs to be updated."

Officials at the center say they'd like to start renovations next spring. If you are interested in donating, you can get more information HERE.
