DELAWARE WATER GAP -- This is a big weekend in the Poconos with tens of thousands of NASCAR fans pouring in for Sundays Pennsylvania 400 at the raceway in Long Pond.

It comes as authorities are investigating a rash of thefts at one popular tourist spot.

Rangers at the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area tell us about five break-ins have happened just this month at various hiking trail parking lots. That's why they are telling visitors to keep valuables locked up in their trunk or simply keep them at home.

A sign at one hiking spot reads, "there has been an increase of vehicle break ins and theft at this location."

It was put up by park rangers after a string of break-ins at the Appalachian Trail parking lot.

"It's a real shame that you have to worry about your car or your valuables or anything that you brought along when all you are trying to do is hike and enjoy nature," said Philadelphia resident Christopher Conti.

According to park rangers, thieves target this lot because it's set back from public roads.

About five break-ins happened just this month. That's why they are giving hikers the heads up to lock up.

"If they see anything of value in the vehicle such as a laptop, electronic device, a wallet or a purse, if no one is around, they will break the window, snatch and grab it and go," said park ranger Christopher Kross.

Rangers advise putting valuable items in your trunk where no one can see in, take it with you, or simply leave it at home.

"It's definitely not good. When I go hiking, I leave all my stuff in my car so it's scary to think if I come back and my stuff is gone, it's definitely unsettling," said Elese Pullman from Philadelphia.

After Pullman saw the warning sign from rangers, she went back to her car to grab her stuff before she continued her hike.

"Well, I am definitely going to make sure it's locked now and hope for the best."

Rangers tell us there are more patrol units canvasing the parking lots and surveillance cameras are set up.

If you find yourself in a position something has been stolen from your car contact park rangers immediately.
