Woman dead after house fire in Lycoming County

Flames broke out around 3 p.m. Wednesday along Salem Schoolhouse Road in Jordan Township near Unityville.

LYCOMING COUNTY, Pa. — State police say 75-year-old Joan Stackhouse is dead after a fire broke out at a house that sits off in a wooded area in Lycoming County.

It was just after 3 p.m. when members of the Unityville Volunteer Fire Company, along with several other departments, were dispatched to the mobile home along Salem Schoolhouse Road in Jordan Township near Unityville.

Due to the remote location water had to be brought in to douse the flames by tanker and also pumped in through a nearby creek.

A state police fire marshal was called and remained at the scene hours after the blaze was put out. He could be seen taking pictures and moving throughout the home's charred remains.

As crews began to clean up the scene, family and friends of the victim could be seen gathering in the front yard.

Unityville Fire Chief George Long said the Red Cross has been called to assist any others who may have lived in the home.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation in Lycoming County.
