Wills for Heroes providing legal help for first responders

Our first responders put their lives on the line to protect us and the community. On Saturday, there's an effort to help protect them.

LYCOMING COUNTY, Pa. — Our first responders take care of us in times of need, but who takes care of them when they need help?

The Lycoming Law Association wants to help answer that question with its Wills for Heroes event.

"Military, active or veterans, they're invited to come and get an estate plan for themselves and their spouses at no cost," said Michele Frey, executive director of the Lycoming law Association.

First responders were also invited to register for the event at the Old Lycoming Township Fire Company. They had to sign up in advance.

"When they walk in, they'll meet with a pair of attorneys who will prepare the documents, and then once the lawyers' work is finished, they'll meet with notaries and witnesses and have the documents executed, and they'll walk out after about an hour with a complete set of estate planning documents," Frey said.

"It essentially consists of last will and testament, and then powers of attorney that handle both financial and health care matters, including a living will which deals with end-of-life decision making," said attorney Steve Sholder.

Through sponsors, the Wills for Heroes are available to them at no cost.

"Local law firms and organizations will help us not just produce the documents, but also feed the volunteers and spend the day with us," said Frey.

"They're very thankful, very appreciative, and a lot of them don't really realize how significant this is and how important it is for them to be able to have these documents to protect their families," Sholder added.

This is the first Wills for Heroes event that the Lycoming Law Association has hosted since the pandemic.
