Watching the solar eclipse in Williamsport

Newswatch 16's Mackenzie Aucker stopped by a park in Williamsport where people of all ages gathered to check out the Solar Eclipse.

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — People line up in the parking lot of the Max M. Brown Memorial Park in Williamsport to get a glimpse of the Solar Eclipse. The James V. Brown Library hosted a Solar Eclipse picnic in the park as part of its "Bubble, Fizz, POP!" program.

"We wanted to have a neat event where everyone could come out from the community and just celebrate right where we are," said Jacquie Weaver, Program Professional at James V. Brown Library."

The program teaches children in kindergarten through second grade all about exploring the sky.

"We evaluated different things like the Solar System, and the Moon, we learned a lot about the Moon and a part of that they did the projects that you see behind us," said Weaver.

Children in the "Bubble, Fizz, POP!" program made projects on what in our sky interested them to have them displayed here at the Solar Eclipse Picnic.

"Each week they did book reports, they did a deep dive investigation to make their project, and we just focused on it—also we had Lycoming College students come, we had 3 experts from the astronomy program, and they came, and they answered so many questions, we're so grateful for them," said Weaver.

Trista Myers and her children came from Jersey Shore to see the Eclipse. This isn't her first time experiencing one.

"The last time i remember seeing an Eclipse was in Elementary School and we made the little like pinhole things through the paper plates so that was back in 94 so that was a long time ago," said Trista Myers of Jersey Shore.

Others say they wanted to experience the eclipse with the community.

"Seeing the community get together it's been quite nice, even with the weather being bad and rainy, and you can't see the eclipse but it was still nice to talk to people and meet people from the community and we need more of that here," said Jesse Gillihan of Williamsport.
