Weight limit lowered on bridge in Luzerne County

The span connecting Nanticoke and West Nanticoke now has a lower weight limit, county officials said on Wednesday.

NANTICOKE, Pa. — Luzerne County officials have lowered the weight limit on a bridge across the Susquehanna River.

The bridge that carries Broadway Street across the river between Nanticoke and West Nanticoke now has a five-ton weight limit, county officials said on Wednesday.

Luzerne County Manager Romilda Crocamo said that a review of the inspection report, discussions with PennDOT, and considerations of public safety led the county to lower the limit.

Newswatch 16 video from earlier this year shows a 15-ton weight limit sign on the bridge.

The bridge was inspected in early March.

Nanticoke fire officials say their larger trucks are unable to use the bridge.

The county is considering two options. One is a partial replacement, using some of the current structure but widening the lanes and the entrances. The other is a complete replacement of the bridge in a new location.

Fully replacing the structure comes with a $ 64 million price tag that Luzerne County officials say they currently can't afford.

The century-old bridge was reconstructed in 1987.

Luzerne County is also dealing with replacing two bridges across the Susquehanna River between Pittston and West Pittston.
