PLAINS TOWNSHIP -- "The Revenant" has earned 12 Oscar nominations, including one for its star Leonardo DiCaprio. The movie also received a nomination for sound mixing, partly thanks to a native to Luzerne County.

Geordy Sincavage mixed the sounds in the movie. It's called foley editing.

“It's all the noises you hear in the shows and movies and he does great work, obviously, for the movie that he's done,” explained his brother, Chris.

Instead of using a lot of music to move the movie forward, Geordy said the director wanted to focus on rich, compelling sounds.

Geordy grew up in Plains Township and went to Coughlin High School in Wilkes-Barre. Now he lives in Los Angeles. He talked to Newswatch 16 over the phone about how he created the sound effects in a studio.

“We'll bring in trees, when the guy's swimming in the water, we have a big water pit that we actually make those sounds with,” Geordy said.

The Sincavage family is expecting a win.

“I'm proud, actually. It's a good thing and you've got to be proud of something like that,” said George, Geordy’s dad.

You can see the Oscars on Sunday, February 28 on WNEP-TV.
