AVOCA -- Players from a little league in Luzerne County got a surprise Monday.
The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders helped clean up their field. It was all part of an online contest that the Avoca Dupont little leaguers won.
They say they love their new field, and were amazed that it was all done by professional groundskeepers.
"Very cool," said Dylan Lukachko of Pittston. "I can't believe how RailRiders did our field. It looks pretty cool."
With head groundskeeper Steve Horn, the work crew leveled and conditioned the field, cleaned it up, weed-whacked, picked up garbage and brought their own tools for the work. Both players and coaches agree that it's an amazing partnership.
"This is a big help in that, to make the field playable, especially coming up now in tournament time for the little league," said Joseph Fritz, President if Avoca Dupont Little League.
The whole idea stemmed from an online contest on Facebook. Whichever little league team won the most votes got the field cleanup by the RailRiders grounds crew.
"We're truly engaged in our community, and the adopt-a-field program is one of the ways we're able to give back to the community that so much supports us," said RailRiders GM and President Rob Crain.
The best feeling, says the RailRiders president, is seeing the kids on their field.
"And just their face and their reaction is really the priceless moment."
