Race for 120th District in Luzerne County brings out voters

In the Pennsylvania House of Representatives 120th District, five candidates are looking to take the seat come November.

LUZERNE COUNTY, Pa. — As people cast their votes across northeastern and central Pennsylvania, one race in particular drew voters in  Luzerne County.

In the Pennsylvania House of Representatives 120th District, five candidates are looking to take the seat come November. Three Republicans and two Democrats are going head-to-head to see who will be on the ballot.

It was a steady stream of voters this primary day in the Back Mountain as people headed to the polls along Route 309 in Dallas Township.

"I was expecting to see a line out the door, so I waited just a little bit to register," Thomas Cooney said.

This precinct is part of one of the most crowded ballots in the race for the State House seat in the 120th District.

Current Representative Aaron Kaufer decided not to run for reelection.

"You get tired sometimes of the same old names," voter George Nelson said. "You like to see new faces, younger people, people with new ideas."

While voters came out to cast their ballots at the polls, they said there was one thing missing.

"It's a little discouraging to see the young people not coming out. If you don't vote, you can't complain," Linda Dorrance said.

While these voters expect a much higher turnout for the general election this fall, with it being a presidential year, they say these primary days are just as important.

"In November, they may not get the choices they want because they didn't come out today," Nelson said.
