WILKES-BARRE — A work release counselor at the Luzerne County Correctional Facility pleaded guilty to extortion and a weapons charge.

Investigators say between November 2013 and February 2016, Louis Elmy, 51, of Wilkes-Barre took money and other valuable items from inmates on work release. In exchange, he gave them special privileges and unauthorized furloughs.

He was also charged in February with possessing a firearm while dealing crack cocaine.

Elmy pleaded guilty to the charges Thursday in federal court in Scranton.

He faces at least five years in prison for the weapons charge and up to 20 years for the extortion charge. He will be sentenced at a later date.
