Sudden squall to blame for Turnpike crashes in Luzerne County, state police say

One person suffered minor injuries

BEAR CREEK TOWNSHIP, PA — Just one person suffered a minor injury amid a handful of crashes Sunday on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Luzerne County.

State police said the the sudden squall that slicked the roads around noon led to a tractor trailer jackknifing on the Turnpike around mile marker 109. 

The driver, Keyshawn Thompson, had a minor injury but did not need a ride to a hospital. His truck blocked both travel lanes.

Within minutes, a Honda HR-V heading south slid as the driver tried hit the brakes upon reaching the jackknifed truck. However, the driver struck other stopped vehicles before the driver managed to bring the vehicle to a rest.

As crews worked the clear the wrecks, the state Department of Transportation warned to expect "major delays."

As of about 2 p.m. Sunday, traffic started flowing again on both the north and southbound sides.

Traffic is stopped along part of the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Luzerne County.

Crews were called to a 5-vehicle crash between the Wilkes-Barre (#105) and Wyoming Valley (#115) exits just before noon on Sunday.

Information is limited at this time, but PennDOT is warning drivers to "expect major delays."

All lanes were closed.  As of about 2 p.m. Sunday, traffic started flowing again on both the north and southbound sides.  Each direction has a lane restriction.  

Travelers are encouraged to find alternate routes.
