Luzerne County woman celebrates milestone birthday

It was a special celebration on Tuesday as folks in Hazleton gathered to wish Helen Rushinski a Happy 107th Birthday.

HAZLETON, Pa. — Each month, the staff at the Pavilion at St. Luke Village in Hazleton host a party to celebrate those who have a birthday that month.

There are five residents who are marking a milestone in February, but one in particular is extra special.

Helen Rushinski is turning 107 years old!

Helen had the seat of honor in the activity room, joined by residents, staff, and her family.

"I'm surprised! It's beautiful. I didn't expect this," said Helen.

Born in 1917, the same year America joined World War I and Woodrow Wilson was elected to his second term as President.

Helen Rushinski spent most of her life in Hazleton and says she's thankful for each of her 107 years, "There's a lot of good memories that I have but I can't remember them all."

Helen's son, Joe, and his wife were also at the party to celebrate the milestone.

Joe says it's hard to believe his mom's age just by looking at her, "Everybody thinks she's about 85. She went to the eye doctor for a visit one time, and the doctor called her up and said I think you've got the wrong date."

Helen has only been a resident for the past two years at St. Luke Village. Joe says she was having a hard time getting around recently but that wasn't always the case.

"She was driving at 101 years old. She wanted to go out for dinner, pay her bills, she didn't want to have anybody come and help her or anything like that. She was strong-minded, and she was on her way," Joe said.

So we had to ask Helen the obvious question what is the secret to a long life?

"I have no idea! I'm questioning that myself," said Helen.

Helen will celebrate her official birthday on Friday.

From everyone at Newswatch 16, Happy Birthday, Helen!
