Juvenile charged in Wilkes-Barre shooting death

The Luzerne County district attorney's office has charged a juvenile in connection with the shooting death of a 13-year-old boy earlier this week.

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — Days after a 13-year-old boy was shot and killed in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County District Attorney Sam Sanguedolce announced charges.

"The case involves juveniles, so as a result, we cannot release too much information except that charges have been filed and the accused is in custody," Sanguedolce said.

The shooting happened Monday night at the Midland Court apartments in the city. Despite lifesaving measures, the boy died at the scene.

The name of the victim is being withheld.

Police arrested a juvenile for the shooting. The exact charges have not been released, but the Luzerne County coroner's office ruled the death a homicide.

While officials aren't saying what led to the shooting, Sanguedolce stressed gun safety.

"I know you can tell your children not to play with guns, and hopefully they listen. But let's not leave it to hope. Kids are naturally curious and do not understand the consequences of their actions, and that is why we have juvenile court," Sanguedolce said.

He encourages gun owners to store their weapons safely.

"Lock up the ammo separate from where the firearm is if you are not going to be around to supervise. Utilize these gun locks and make sure kids can't find both and load it. This will disable them."

The DA says any gun owner who needs a gun lock can get one for free at the county sheriff's office.
