Former Kingston Mayor Jim Haggerty dies after battle with cancer

The long-time public servant from Luzerne County is being remembered in the community he served.

KINGSTON, Pa. — Flags are flying half-staff and black bunting lines the municipal building in Kingston as signs of mourning for magisterial district judge and former Mayor Jim Haggerty.

Haggerty died Wednesday after a battle with an aggressive form of cancer, which he documented on Facebook.

He served as Kingston's mayor from 1998 until 2017.

Paul Keating worked alongside him for more than 20 years.

"A legacy that clearly enriched the lives of many who live in this community," Keating said.

Haggerty was admitted to Rosewell Park Cancer Center in Buffalo, New York, on his birthday in November.

Those who knew him like family say he fought courageously.

"Jim was a selfless man as a mayor, as a citizen, as a friend. And he demonstrated that selflessness until this final days."

Those who worked with him at his magisterial office tell us he has been out of work ever since. They did not want to go on camera, as they are processing the loss of their friend and colleague.

Photos of Haggerty line the wall of the municipal building in Kingston, a reminder of his decades-long leadership and dedication to the borough.

He has presided as a magisterial district judge since 2018.

His dedication to his public service and his impact on Luzerne County is being remembered. In a statement shared with Newswatch 16, Luzerne County Manager Romilda Crocamo said:

"Beyond his professional accomplishments, Jim Haggerty was known for his wit and wisdom, which he generously shared with those around him. His ability to bring levity to any situation and his insightful perspective on matters of importance made him a beloved figure in the community. His wisdom will continue to inspire and guide us as we strive to build a better future for Luzerne County."

"I don't think Jim was prouder of anything than being the mayor of his hometown," Keating added.

Services have yet to be announced. Jim Haggerty was 58 years old.
