UPDATE: Repairs to water main break in Dunmore completed early Saturday

The break affected several nearby communities in Lackawanna County.

DUNMORE, Pa. — Repairs to a large water main break in Dunmore were completed early Saturday morning.

Service has now been restored to homes and businesses that lost water. Crews were also flushing areas to eliminate any discolored water.

Pennsylvania American Water crews had been working near the intersection of Quincy Avenue and West Grove Street in Dunmore. That's where a 24-inch main broke around 11 p.m. Thursday.

A spokesperson for PA American Water said contractors had to dig down eight feet and remove a 15-foot section of pipe. The contractors then installed a new section of pipe.

The utility has updated an earlier alert to warn that repairs may not be complete until noon on Saturday, but an email from a spokesperson for the utility company indicated that the main was repaired around 1 a.m. Saturday.

The alert showed that the break affected an area stretching from Old Forge to Blakely, including Taylor and a large part of Scranton.

A spokesperson for PA American Water said about 100 homes and businesses near the break had no water. Others in the affected area may have had low water pressure or discolored water.

The utility also issued a second alert around 11 a.m. Friday. That alert called on PA American Water customers in Clarks Summit and surrounding communities to limit non-essential water usage while the break in Dunmore was being repaired.
