Second arrest for planning shooting at Scranton school

The second arrest comes as gang violence is top of mind for police in Scranton.

SCRANTON, Pa. — This was the scene Wednesday afternoon near Scranton High School after police say 16-year-old Shayir Dickerson took a bus from Wilkes Barre to Scranton.  Police received a call about a suspicious person with a gun. Police later intercepted Dickerson with a loaded rifle heading toward the school.

The district's schools were put on lockdown during the incident.

Much like the scene two weeks ago, after Detective Gilmartin was shot, law enforcement from all over worked to track down any leads to find others in connection with Dickerson.

"Scranton Police communicated with Wilkes Barre Police, involved the state police and the FBI all to make a swift arrest and further the investigation to gain more intelligence," said D.A. Mark Powell.

Lackawanna County District Attorney Mark Powell tells Newswatch 16 police have now arrested a 14-year-old.

"There was another individual who has been charged with a juvenile crime who we cannot by law charge as an adult."

Scranton Police say that the juvenile conspired with Dickerson to plan a shooting of rival gang members at the high school.

Many parents had serious concerns after yesterday's arrest and school lockdown. Mayor Paige Cognetti says it's important for everyone to remember to say something if they see something.

"It's been a scary world for a long time with kids in school, and we're going to do everything we can to prevent violence from happening here in Scranton.  We got lucky yesterday and we have to continue to work hard. We're so grateful to the person who called it in, the Scranton Police Department, and the School district for acting quickly," said Paige Cognetti, Mayor of the City of Scranton.

The 14-year-old is being held in a secure facility because of the seriousness of the crime. Dickerson remains locked up in the Lackawanna County Prison.
