Man accused of shooting Scranton detective blamed co-defendant for directing night's violence

Aiden Deininger told state police that Jeremiah Cleveland told him to shoot at houses in the hours before Detective Kyle Gilmartin was shot, new filings show.

SCRANTON, Pa. — A 20-year-old man who state police said shot a Scranton police detective twice in the head last month agreed to talk with investigators and said a co-defendant prompted the night's chaos by directing him to shoot at houses, newly filed court documents say.

The new details were included in an amended criminal complaint filed Monday that charged Jeremiah Cleveland, 19, with a new count of soliciting aggravated assault.

According to the filings, Aiden Deininger, of Scranton, agreed to speak with state troopers on Jan. 17 — the day he was charged with three counts attempted homicide of a law enforcement officer.

He told them Cleveland, directed him early January 11 to shoot at homes in Scranton of people allegedly involved in an assault of Cleveland's girlfriend.

Deininger complied. Detective Kyle Gilmartin, one of the officers investigating the reports of gunshots, was shot twice in the head by Deininger and survived, according to court filings.

Gilmartin is recovering at a rehabilitation facility. Deininger was also shot by Detective Sergeant Joseph Lafferty during the gun fight that wounded Gilmartin.

Deininger and Cleveland are scheduled for a preliminary hearing Feb. 20 at 9:30 a.m.
