Hiking into the new year in Lackawanna County

Across the country, people woke up and ventured outdoors on the first day of the year, taking part in a nationwide hiking event.

LACKAWANNA COUNTY, Pa. — The snowfall from overnight could be found on New Year's Day morning across Lackawanna State Park in North Abington Township, but it didn't keep the geese from the water or folks from bundling up for a First Day Hike.

"Happening all in state parks across the country to encourage people to get out and explore the outdoors and for the first day of the year," said Tony DeSantis, Environmental Education Specialist.

"My sister in South Carolina has been going to their state park for the last few years on the first day and she mentioned it to me. And so when I saw it on the news last week, I said we're going," said Jane Evans, Olyphant.

So, after some introductions and instructions, it was time to head out onto the trail.

"It's a two-mile hike, and we're going to hike Frost Hollow and Snowflake Trails," said DeSantis.

starting the new year off on the right foot.

"I think it's a good New Year's resolution to go for a hike every single day of the year. I don't always make it, but I'm trying," said Evans.

Families, friends, and fur babies took part, and the mud was just part of the experience.

"I do the first-day hike every year. I really enjoy getting out, and that's a good start to the new year," said Gail Sickles, Lake Winola.

Folks with Lackawanna State Park tell Newswatch 16 the first-day hike initiative is more than just about getting people outside.

"It usually introduces some folks to what we do here in educational aspects. We offer educational, recreational programs throughout the year, and some people aren't aware of that," explained DeSantis.

"It's nice to see so many people getting out enjoying the outdoors and nature, and hopefully, it makes everyone appreciate what we have around in northeastern Pennsylvania a little more," added Sickles.
