Food fundraisers held in Lackawanna County

Local fire companies in Lackawanna County held a Super Bowl food fundraiser.

LACKAWANNA COUNTY, Pa. — Wings and Pizza fundraisers were held on Sunday in Lackawanna County.

The Volunteer Hose Company No. 3 on Dunmore Street in Throop held its annual Wing Fest. For the occasion, volunteers made close to 10,000 chicken wings.

At the same time, Throop Hose Company No. 1 on Center Street held its annual Chicken Barbecue, which sold out within the first 5 minutes. This was the 18th year for the wing fest in Lackawanna County.

"This is a critical one for us. This is our largest fundraiser besides our envelope drive from our community. Throop Borough Council is very good to our organization and continues to provide with necessary funds, but we use this for equipment purchases, upgrades, maintenance on the apparatus, and in general just whatever we need," said Andy Hegedus, Throop Fire Chief.

Also, in Lackawanna County, another fire company was holding a pizza and wing sale for the Super Bowl.

The Jefferson Township Volunteer Fire Company near Mount Cobb made over 15 hundred pounds of chicken wings and more than 200 take-and-bake pizzas.

This is the second-largest fundraiser for the fire company each year.

"We come together as a huge community, a few guys and girls are coming in. Younger kids, older guys, we volunteer for the community and save lives," said Haley Shaffer, Junior Firefighter.

The money raised from the pizza and wing sale will go back to the fire company in Lackawanna County.
