Carve 4 Cancer returns to Montage Mountain

It was a fun day on the slopes while honoring the legacy of a Luzerne County man's battle with cancer.

SCRANTON, Pa. — Skiiers and snowboarders spent Saturday "Carving 4 Cancer" on Montage Mountain in Scranton.

The Live Like Brent Foundation holds the event every year to raise awareness for blood cancers in memory of Brent Evans.

"He was an unbelievably fun and amazing guy who started this organization when he had cancer," said Josh Frank, president of the Live Like Brent Foundation.

"Brent had non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, he had two bouts, and unfortunately, the third time, he was a real fighter, but unfortunately, he lost the battle," said Jeff Mattes, Live Like Brent Foundation Executive Director.

Brent Evans of Wilkes-Barre was only 33 years old when he passed away in 2017. He started the "Carve 4 Cancer" event not long after he got his diagnosis as a way to help other families going through the same thing.

"The first he got cancer, we did a bone marrow transplant from me to him, and he said his goal was to help other people beat this and help other people offset the cost," said Ryan Evans, older brother of Brent Evans.

His older brother Ryan tells Newswatch 16 that Brent never turned down a chance to be out on his snowboard.

"Every chance he could through high school, through college, every holiday, he tried to sneak somewhere with his friends; that was his motivation in between cancer treatments; as soon as he felt good enough, he was sneaking out, then he'd tell the doctor later," said Ryan.

The "Carve 4 Cancer" event at Montage Mountain is the largest fundraiser to help the foundation keep the mission going.

"They provide financial assistance for everything from transportation, so lodging, medication, all of these things that come up during treatment that these patients really need help with financially," said Josh.
