CARBONDALE -- A man who served his country and became known as a World War II hero has been honored in his hometown in Lackawanna County.
A ceremony was held Saturday afternoon in Memorial Park in Carbondale to unveil a bust of Brigadier General Alvin Ungerleider, a native son of the Pioneer City.
The brigadier general was wounded twice during the invasion of Normandy and helped liberate Nazi concentration camps.
Distant family made the trip to learn more about the man.
"I didn't really know a lot about Al. I know so much more, I'm so proud to know. He fought in three wars, freed Jews from concentration camps, it makes me so proud," said Vicki Ungerleider.
In 1994, Ungerleider was chosen to go along with President Clinton to lay the wreath at Normandy for the 50th anniversary of D-Day.
Private donations helped pay for the bust of the war hero in Carbondale.
